SpeakWrite typists are qualified legal or general transcriptionists who contract with us to
receive transcription work to complete from their own home, on their own schedule.
You can apply to be a contract typist on-line, and upon approval of your application and the completion of the required testing, you will be able to access our proprietary software which functions as a "key" allowing you to complete the assigned jobs. You may then sign into our system, pick up work
from our clients, then upload your finished transcriptions to our system via
the Internet.
What exactly do SpeakWrite typists do? As a SpeakWrite typist you have the opportunity to schedule your desired work week, two weeks in advance. At the beginning of your scheduled work shift, you sign on to our on-line system, automatically receive dictations to transcribe, complete those transcriptions and submit the finished work to be emailed back to our clients. This process continues until the end of your work shift, at which time you sign off until your next scheduled shift.
[NOTE: WE DO NOT DO DATA ENTRY OF ANY TYPE. WE DO ONLY TRANSCRIPTION OF
DOCUMENTS FROM AUDIO. WE HAVE NO DATA ENTRY POSITIONS.]
SpeakWrite allows you to choose your own work schedule and work as many hours as you would like and also have control of that schedule on a week to week basis. Once you are under contract, you will be given access to an on-line schedule and you are able to specify the hours you would like to work for a calendar month.
What is the compensation for a SpeakWrite typist and how is payment delivered?
SpeakWrite typists are paid at a rate of ½ cent per word transcribed, plus
bonus compensation above a certain level each week. Good
typists who meet our criteria can generally earn $10-$12 per hour after a short
time of working within our system;
some of our typists earn as much as $15 per hour or more. There
are no caps on the amount you can earn, so the faster and more efficiently you can
complete the work, the more you can make. Payment is made via check twice a month,
shortly after the 1st and the 15th.
How long does it take to apply to SpeakWrite?
Once you have submitted the necessary paperwork (which can be found under
"Get Started on Your Application Now"), we will immediately review your information.
Once approved, we will contact you and you will be able to download the
Typist Manual and an Evaluation Quiz. If your Evaluation
Quiz responses are satisfactory, you will be able to immediately begin a series of
testing jobs.
The testing jobs consist of short jobs designed to demonstrate
your typing skills and your knowledge of legal or general transcription and they
verify that your computer is functioning properly with our software. These evaluations can be completed at your own pace and generally taking a day or so to finish. The jobs will be reviewed upon completion to insure that all software programs are functioning correctly and the quality of your work meets the guidelines set forth by SpeakWrite.YOUR FINAL ACCEPTANCE AS A SpeakWrite
INDEPENDENT CONTRACTOR WILL NOT BE DETERMINED UNTIL SATISFACTORY COMPLETION
OF THE TESTING JOBS. All in all, the application process and testing jobs can be completed in a couple of days or so if you work diligently to fulfill all the necessary requirements. If the testing jobs are successfully completed, you will be accepted as a
SpeakWrite independent contractor and will then be able to order a foot
pedal (the foot pedal costs around $75 and is sold through a company
independent of SpeakWrite). When you receive your pedal (which
typically takes about a week to be delivered or can be 'rush' delivered if you wish),
you will install
and test your foot pedal and when your foot pedal is working properly you
will be able to sign up for work. As long as your computer meets the
requirements listed under "Equipment and Software Required" it is not
necessary to purchase any other software or materials to work with us.
